Shawn Dianne Phelps
Background: For the past decade I’ve worked as a business writer/editor. My most notable position was as senior editor at Financial Post Business Magazine. After that I was editor-in-chief at Canada’s biggest HR magazine for over three years. I had always wanted to teach, so I became an instructor at Centennial College in its book and publishing program for two years. I have lived and worked all around world. Among other things, I have taught English to novice monks in Thailand, researched education in townships in South Africa and helped create marketing materials for a rain forest resort in Australia. This gives me a great appreciation for learning from different cultures and people. I love learning just as much as I love teaching.
Likes: I really enjoy sharing my experience with others. Teaching is a joy for me. There is nothing more satisfying than showing people what they are capable of and then stepping back to watch them achieve new things on their own. But one of the best things about teaching is that every person in the room is an expert on something, and so we all end up learning from each other. Other than that, I like homemade perogies. I like walking aimlessly, especially in places I’ve never been. Oh yes, and pralines and cream ice cream!
Dislikes: When I can’t remember something–like someone’s name–that drives me crazy. I also deeply believe the world would be a better place without goat cheese.
Education: BA in Journalism, Ryerson University. Regularly attend training and leadership workshops. Have travelled through over 20 countries by plane, train, bus, motorcycle, horse, camel and elephant (an education in itself).
Favorite quote: What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. Walt Emerson
What I do in the rest of my life: I co-run a children’s education charity that helps kindergarten schools in Laos. I also volunteer as a park steward in High Park. I have recently become obsessed with gardening, and I am planting a half acre forest garden at our family cottage in Bruce County.
