Thanks for your passionate defense of the semicolon. Still, I'd rather have my 'ands' and 'buts.'

The semi-colon is a beautiful punctuation mark. Think of all those ghastly 'buts' and 'ands' that can be removed because it exists. It enables loose connections of thoughts, ideas, emotions and concepts that are connected and simultaneously not connected. It allows elaboration of any one concept when more than one is being presented. That it has a right or wrong place to be used outside of simple grammatical sense, or that it is a symbol of intellectual snobbery is to judge it, and lives only in the mind of the reader. Besides, how much of the worth of the associated thoughts, ideas, emotions and concepts are lost in worrying about how they are semantically joined?
